I CLOSE MY office’s door after Brock and spin around to face him as he falls flat on the small couch, his legs more off it than on. He sighs and rubs his red-rimmed eyes, brought on by staring so long at different screens and tiny print as he fixed the contract that we have to fight for with Mr. Zann and his two employees.

I lean my back against the thin wooden paneled door. “What’s gotten into you? I thought you’d bite Zann’s head off during the negotiations.’’

He blows the air out of his lungs and covers his face with his big hands, growling in his palms with a frustration that eludes me. I mean, we just signed a new contract that is going to bring new clients, and that will ensure our financial security for half of next year. If it’s not the time to celebrate and be overjoyed, I don’t know when it is.

“He’s going to fuck you over, Addy.’’

“What are you talking about? We have the best lawyers in the Midwest, and they drew up the contract. You read it over and over, and you gave me your green light. I read it over and over, and it’s nothing different from what we’re used to.’’

He sits up and taps the space next to him. I stride to him and perch on the couch facing him. Brock’s eyes are trying to pierce through me as if he’s convinced I’m hiding something of some sort. He puts a hand on my bare knee, his long fingers helping my skirt to hike higher on my thighs. His smirk is there, but it’s tinged with the nervous energy that doesn’t seem to leave him since I called him about Mr. Zann.

“I’m not talking about work, Addy.’’ He traces small circles with his thumb on the inside of my knee. It becomes difficult to pay attention to what he’s trying to tell me. “Zann wants in your panties.’’

Now, I know what a cold shower is like. I tense up and lean back, dislodging his tantalizing hand from my sensitive skin. “You’re delusional.’’

“You’re the delusional one,’’ he bites back, his face inches from mine, his words seething. “The man has his eyes set on you. I saw it the last time he came here, and I thought he’d go to someone else since it’s been months, but now…Fuck, I know he’s going to be in touch with you in no time. He’ll dine you, and before you know it, he’s going to bed you before he dismisses you like trash because the man isn’t able to hold an interest in someone for longer than two minutes.’’

I avert my gaze to my hands on my lap twisting the hem of my vest. “I wouldn’t do that, Brock. He’s a client.’’

“And he’s persistent if what I heard is true.’’

I snap my head up and glare at him. “Do you think I’m that easy? It’s not because we’re fuck buddies on top of being best friends that I let any random guy put his dick in me, Brock.
